Shaving Fork Legs

I took some pictures of how I shaved the legs on my forks for my “Memento Mori” ironhead.

The original 35mm Showas were beat to hell, and had these big tabs for the fender which I certainly wasn’t going to run.

I started by marking out some rough cuts with a sharpie. I’ll whack off the bulk of the material with a 4.5” cutoff wheel on my angle grinder.

There is (well, was) a big pad where the reflector mounted. Ick.

I’ll use a grinding disk to knock off some of the bulk.

Splitting The Rockers

One of the things we did on the “Memento Mori” ironhead was to split the rockers. This isn’t a new thing, but the Ironhead rocker covers are different from Shovel rocker covers. They are shaped differently, with one side coming to a square corner and the other having a curved corner. They also have fewer bolts, so if you eliminate the middle bolt you only have three bolts holding each rocker half, not four like a shovel.

The way we modified these came from Weyland at Solutions Machining. He nailed it, modifying Ironhead rockers really requires getting the two

Making an ugly tank...not so

The Ugly Bike Cometh

Didja ever get the crazy idea to buy a bike you don’t really need? To start a new project when you’ve already got three or four already cooking? I’m probably the only one that ends up in these situations.

It was a nice spring day, and I’d spotted a bargain Ironhead Sportster on CraigsList. Damn computers. I went over and looked at it with my buddy Brian. We got it started (MAN it was hard to start, I had a whopper bruise on the inside of my leg that night!) I rode it around, convinced myself
