Fabrication Time

The idea is pretty simple, in fact the job was pretty simple too.

First I rolled a piece of round bar stock as a template to fit against the radius of the fender. Using this as a layout tool I made a cardboard pattern which I then traced onto 16 gage sheetmetal. I cut out two blanks, clamped them together and tack welded them along the top edge.

After tacking I pried them apart and shaped the sides. Very low tech.

A coat of primer, some sanding, black base coat, orange holo-flake, clear and then topped off with scrolls by “Real Ralph”, and we’re done!

Let’s Change It

I wanted to make it a little more interesting, and try to lose the “flatness”. Looking at how the seat met the fender gave me an idea, which I promptly fabricated in cardboard.

Modifying the rear fender The Beginnings The rear fender on “The Ugly Ironhead” was just the stock fender that had been cut down. In fact, the previous owner held it up to a wide belt sander and flattened the entire lower edge. It’s a little square, and not too interesting to my eye. Now, really, I’d prefer to hardtail this bike and have a nice fender mounted tight to the tire. I don’t have time, and I want to ride NOW, so we’re going to do the best we can with this fender.

From the rear it’s not terrible…
